The Cycle Safe Program: Cycling Towards a Safer School Community

Did you know that cycling is one of the easiest ways to stay active and reduce pollution at the same time? Riding a bike helps improve physical health, supports mental well-being, and reduces the number of cars on the road, making communities safer and cleaner. Because of this, we are pleased to introduce the Cycle Safe Program for students in grades 5-8. The program teaches cycling safety skills, including helmet fitting, rules of the road, signaling, and other safe riding practices. Together, we can help make our community safer for everyone who walks, bikes, and rolls.

The Cycle Safe Program: Keep Your Head Safe

Our school is excited to be participating in the Cycle Safe Program, helping students in grades 5 – 8 build the skills and confidence they need to ride safely and responsibly. Over the coming weeks, our students are learning important cycling safety tips, including the importance of wearing a bike helmet when riding. Taking the time to ensure a secure and comfortable helmet fit is essential for effective head protection. Ask your student about the 2-V-1 rule!
(Helmet should sit level with 2 finger widths between it and the eyebrows, the side straps should form a V below each ear, and the bottom strap should fit 1 finger between it and the chin).

The Cycle Safe Program: Ready, Set, Ride!

Keeping yourself safe while riding a bike includes many things, such as hand signals to communicate with others on the road, reading and following road signs, understanding parts of the bicycle, and how to keep your bike safe and functioning. Students participating in the Cycle Safe Program have been learning tips and tricks to keep everyone safe on our neighbourhood streets this summer. So, get ready, set, ride!

School Announcements:

Monday
Today’s Safe Cycling Tip of the Day is: Make sure your helmet fits properly. Remember the 2–V–1 rule: level on your head, with 2 finger widths between the helmet and your brow, straps in a “V” under your ears, and one finger under your chin. A good fit keeps you safe!
Tuesday
Today’s Safe Cycling Tip of the Day is: Be seen! Wear bright clothing and use reflectors or lights so drivers and others can see you clearly.
Wednesday
Today’s Safe Cycling Tip of the Day is: Follow the rules of the road. Stop at stop signs, obey traffic lights, and ride in the same direction as traffic.
Thursday
Today’s Safe Cycling Tip of the Day is: Wear your helmet every time you ride. Make sure it fits snug and sits level on your head to protect your brain.
Friday
Today’s Safe Cycling Tip of the Day is: Use the Signal Sandwich! Signal before you turn, make your move, then signal again if needed—this helps everyone know where you’re going.
