The Cycle Safe Program requires an evaluation that has been approved by the Thames Valley (TVDSB) and London Catholic (LDCSB) District School Boards. Below you will find a description of the tasks, timelines, and resources required to complete the Cycle Safe Evaluation.

Week 1
Bike Rack Tracking
Cycle Safe School Leads are required to take consistent photos of school bike racks to measure bike usage before the Cycle Safe program. Photos should be taken on three non-rainy weekdays before and after implementation, at similar times (ideally mid-morning). Each rack must be clearly visible, photographed from the same angle and distance, without including identifiable students. One photo per rack per day should be captured, including bikes parked nearby. Full instructions are available on the Bike Rack Tracking How to Guide.
Week 2 – Week 4
Implement Cycle Safe
Utilize the Cycle Safe Toolkit to implement the four modules for the Cycle Safe program in selected Grade 5 to 8 classrooms at your school.
School Tracking
The Cycle Safe School Tracking Form is used by school administrators to document how the Cycle Safe program is implemented and supported throughout the school.
The form captures key information about program delivery, including timelines, activities, and school-level involvement. Schools record which components of Cycle Safe were implemented, such as cycling education, promotion activities, or equipment distribution, along with notes on participation and engagement. It also tracks partnerships, communication efforts, and any challenges or adaptations made during implementation.
Classroom Tracking
Each classroom teacher who implements the Cycle Safe modules in their classroom should use the Cycle Safe Classroom Tracking Form to document how the Cycle Safe program is delivered.
The form captures key information on lesson delivery, including which cycling safety modules and activities were implemented, how often they were used, and how students engaged with the content. Teachers record classroom experiences, noting which resources (e.g., videos, activities, or discussions) were most effective. It also provides space to reflect on student learning, participation, and any challenges encountered during implementation.
Week 4
Bike Rack Tracking
Cycle Safe School Leads are required to take consistent photos of school bike racks to measure bike usage after the Cycle Safe program.
Week 5
Family Surveys
Schools are asked to distribute the survey advertisement to all parents of children who participated in the Cycle Safe program. This short survey asks about your perceptions of your child’s cycling safety and readiness following the program. There are also a few questions to ask children about their experience participating in the project. If you would like printed copies of the advertisement, please contact the ASRTS research team at info@activesaferoutes.ca with the Subject Heading: Cycle Safe Family Surveys: School Name.
Program Lead Survey
Principals or designated leads are asked to complete a short Cycle Safe Implementation Team Survey to share their school’s experience with program application, delivery, and outcomes. The survey helps improve future programming by capturing successes, challenges, and impacts on students. It takes 10–15 minutes, is voluntary, and responses are anonymous.
