Walking School Bus or Bicycle Train

Once walking and wheeling is underway, schools can increase the challenge. A ‘Walking School Bus’ or ‘Bicycle Train’ is a group of families that walk or wheel along an established route together, collecting more families as they go to make the trip to and from school more safe and sociable.

Walking School Buses can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school to as structured as a route with meeting points, a timetable and a regularly rotated schedule of trained volunteers. A variation on the walking school bus is the bicycle train, in which adults supervise children riding their bikes to school. Walking School Buses and Bicycle Trains can operate daily, once a week or month or just on certain days. Choose what works for you!
